If a prize were awarded for the youngest sculptor, Robin Hunt would be this year’s winner. She is the seven-year-old grand daughter of Betty Snyder, and Tamara Buchanan is her great aunt.

Betty and Robin arrived at camp and, in short order, Robin had her table set up in the hand carving tent. She selected a large piece of alabaster for her first sculpture. After studying it for a while, she decided that she wanted to drill a hole through the middle of it. I helped her get started on this task, but, after making a depression, she discovered the form of an owl lurking in the stone. With skill and vision well beyond her years, Robin succeeded in producing a fine Great Horned owl.

After hearing about the auction, she decided to place her owl up for bid. Careful intervention on Betty’s behalf convinced Robin that it might be a good idea to save her owl so she could show it to family and friends back home. Not deterred from the notion of contributing to the auction, Robin scouted around the field to find a variety of shards of stone. She drilled holes in them and produced five necklaces as her contribution. (I was lucky enough to get one.)

This fall, Robin will be attending Cedarwood Elementary School in Bothell. She is hoping for a gift of a set of carving tools and plans next year to enter a piece in Camp B’s Arts Walk
