Sunny weather was the order of the day on my visit to the Whidbey Island Retreat 2000 this last weekend. I parked my car and walked down the road past the farmhouse. All at once I heard this strange music - CHINK - TINK - TONK. Hammers striking tools, tools hitting stone. Each stone had a slightly different tone. Of the 40 people working under the roofs of the open log pavilion and the big white tent, at least 25 at a time were working to make this wonderful stone symphony.

That, along with the great food and the sculpture gallery in the entry way at the main building made me very glad I could visit even for the day.

So if you weren’t one of the lucky 40 attending this year, keep it in mind for next year. Look for pictures and more information in the next issue of Sculpture Northwest.
